Chelsea kept their unbeaten start to the Premier League season alive with their 3-1 victory over Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge on Sunday .

The Blues moved above Liverpool and up to second in the table with the win achieved courtesy of a brace from Alvaro Morata and a strike from Pedro, ensuring that the equaliser Andros Townsend scored for the visitors didn’t matter much come the final whistle.

Key to the Blues performance was the display of midfielder Jorginho again, with the Brazil-born Italy international – a key summer signing – dictating play and earning himself a breather when he was replaced late on by Cesc Fabregas.

The former Napoli man has assumed a key role for Blues boss Maurizio Sarri since he linked up with him again in the summer, and in fact there is probably no-one in football who knows Sarri better.

And he knows him so well that he knows all about his superstitions, including one really odd one.

“It’s really easy to understand him you know,” Jorginho explained to Chelsea TV prior to Sunday’s fixture.

“The way he seems – that’s how he is. He has no secrets. He’s a simple guy. He has his beliefs, his superstitions. Everyone does.

“For example, he won’t touch the match ball ever. Even if we’re losing, the ball goes out and we need to get the ball back in play as fast as possible, he won’t go near it. No way – he won’t touch it.

“Then there are other things too, but that’s normal, no?”

Not quite, Jorginho, no.

But it seems to be working for the Italian coach, as his unbeaten run of 11 matches has set a new record for a new manager in their first season in the Premier League.

Whether he can keep it up remains to be seen, but don’t expect to see him touching the ball soon!
